Results of TMCA-TML Municipal Election Survey
Many cities are still wrestling with SB 100 and its implications for 2012 elections and future municipal budgets. Following an animated panel discussion on this topic in August at the TMCCP Legislative Update in Austin, the Municipal Clerks Association distributed an e-survey to its membership regarding future election plans in members' respective cities. Survey results indicated that most cities will continue conducting election business as usual, and the vast majority has no plans to change current election dates or procedures.

Alan was recently appointed as 2011-2012 Texas State Chair of the IMLA. He replaces colleague and friend Art Pertile (former Waco City Attorney and now with Olson & Olson of Houston), who is taking a seat on the IMLA Board of Directors. IMLA is a non-profit organization representing the interests of local governments and dedicated to promoting, supporting and strengthening local government law.

A dear friend of ours, Dr. Howard Balanoff, Ph.D., has just been honored as a Fellow in the National Academy of Public Administration, an organization chartered by Congress. He is a professor at Texas State University, and organizer of the Certified Public Management (CPM) Program, for which Alan routinely provides Open Government training. Congratulations, Dr. Balanoff!

Alan is on the planning committee for the 2011 American Planning Association Texas Chapter Annual Conference to be held at the Hilton Hotel in downtown Austin. Alan will be co-presenting A Sign Of The Times with Jennifer Evans-Cowley PhD, AICP (Ohio State University), on Friday, October 7th from 2:00 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. The session will explore the variety of emerging sign types, including digital signs, and provide insight into how communities are dealing with sign regulation to maintain their community character.

September 28, 2011TML Region X quarterly meeting
Deborah Jennings, the firm's Legal Assistant, recently attended the TML Region X quarterly meeting, hosted by the City of Bastrop at the City's new Convention and Exhibit Center. The event was very well attended and featured a touching presentation by Bastrop Mayor Terry Orr on the emergency response to the Bastrop fire that started on September 6th. Emergency response and other services were coordinated from the Convention Center building. The fire lasted for more than two weeks, destroying more than 45,000 acres and burning some 1600 homes. Of the more than 8,000 residents evacuated, only two people died in the fire. The Mayor was especially grateful for the tremendous outpouring of community support they received from people and agencies all over the state and the country.

Alan recently attended the TML Region IX quarterly meeting, hosted by the City of Morgan's Point Resort on July 28th. The event was well attended, and included fun for families with hot dogs, swimming and rides on the Fire Boat before the meeting!
